Whichever direction you are coming from, and however you are getting here, Hamburg is easily accessible by air, rail and road, and even by ferry via the Lübeck-Travemünde Baltic Sea port.
Arriving by plane
60 airlines fly direct to Hamburg from 120 destinations around the world. The airport is situated only 8.5 kilometres from Hamburg’s city centre and is connected to the city’s comprehensive public transport network via S-Bahn (suburban railway; 30 minutes journey to the conference venue).
At the airport, there will be information desks for conference delegates in Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 (in the baggage claim halls, which will be clearly visible to all arriving passengers; at peak times). Our volunteers will help you find your way to the S-Bahn (suburban rail; brings you fast into the city center) or to the taxi stand. They can also answer other questions you may have.

You can get a preliminary conference ticket containing a public transport ticket at the information desk. This ticket must be exchanged for the name badge when registering on-site (which will include a 5-day ticket for all public transport). If the information desk is not open when you arrive, you can buy a one-way ticket for 3.30 Euros at a ticket vending machine.
With the S1 S-Bahn (metro rail network) line, passengers can travel from the airport to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (central railway station) and back; the journey takes only 25 minutes one-way, and the service operates every 10 minutes. S-Bahn ticket price for a single ticket is 3.30 €. The S-Bahn station “Hamburg Airport (Flughafen)” is directly in front of the terminals and is quick and easy to reach by elevator, by escalator, and by stairs.

Hamburg is also easily accessible for all those arriving by train from other parts of Germany or Europe, and Berlin is less than two hours away by rail.

Local public transport
In Hamburg you can get around the city very easily without a car – thanks to the city’s comprehensive local public transport network that even includes water travel. Six S-Bahn lines, four underground lines (Hochbahn) and numerous bus connections ensure excellent transport links even beyond the city boundaries.
How to get to the venues:
From Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (central railway station) you can use several lines to get to your accommodation or to the venue. The on-site registration will only be held at HafenCity University (from Wednesday to Saturday) and at the Cruise Center (on Wednesday evening at the welcome reception). Check for detailed registration location and time under Logistics in Whova. From Hamburg Hauptbahnhof take U-Bahn subway line U4 in direction Elbbrücken to the HafenCity Universität station (6 minutes, via Jungfernstieg and Überseequartier).
Nearest tube station to our second venue, the Spiegel building, is U-Bahn U1 station Meßberg (500 m / 6 minutes walk to the Spiegel house). Between HafenCity University and Der Spiegel it’s just 700 m.
Plan your journey and find transport connections on the public transport association’s website in German — Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (HVV). Check here for a more advanced search in English.
HVV also offers a useful app to help you get around. Download it on iOS here and Android here.
We will provide a “HVV KombiTicket” to all conference attendees, which will be imprinted on your conference name badge, to be collected upon registration at the conference venue. The public transport ticket printed on your name badge is valid for the duration of the conference. You can use it in the subway (U-Bahn), in suburban trains (S-Bahn, Regionalbahn), in every public-transit bus and the HVV harbour ferrys (see plan at nrch.de/hvvferry).
Public Bike System
Sign up to StadtRAD Hamburg, the local city bike program and hire a bike at one of the 120 service points around the city – one is located directly at the HafenCity University. The first 30 minutes are free of charge, after that the trip will cost 10 Cents per minute or 15 Euros per day.
So, if you want, you can ride for free all day – as long as you check in your bike at any station within 30 minutes. To sign up, you can use a credit card. Register here. There is a 5 Euro annual fee, which can be used as a credit balance within 12 months.
